Today my boys and I were talking about how to spend our NEXT summer. (see with only two weeks left of THIS summer, we are already scheduling for the next. We Massuras are planners.) And we all agreed it would be a great idea to rent an RV and take a road trip. My dad taught me how to drive a large RV he owned (thanks dad)- so I am not nervous about driving a home on WHEELS around the US. Actually, this is something I have always wanted to do. Always. It is probably because I was not forced into the back of a cramped station wagon as a child to go to Aunt Martha’s in Minnesota. I have NO BAD memories of road trips gone awry. It wasn’t something we ever did when I was growing up…we used the RV to go camping in the desert. But that was sorta mad dash driving to get there before it got dark. So, I only have romantic notions of singing show tunes as we tootle on down the road, and stopping at the interesting ‘Largest Ball of String’ side show at the next exit. Where I will take photo after photo before we head on over to the greasiest spoon we can find. We will stop at camp sites along the way, where we are sure to meet other interesting characters who are also ‘living on the road’. We will be totally self contained. And it will be the trip my boys will remember their entire life……I am actually excited about this. I am so excited I wish I had done it this summer. But now I can look forward and plan for an entire year. That is part of the fun too don’t you think? Well it is for people like us, cuz we are planners ya know.
My plan on planning to plan

So…is an RV a camper? Or is it like a campervan? We have a caravan and go away in it every Christmas to the beach – it’s great family time.
Fun! What does hubby say about the whole thing? He’s the one that will (Probably) have to empty the septic tank after all.
I’ll make the playlist of show tunes!
Sounds like just you and the boys…is Ed in this fantasy?
If I may make a suggestion…MOTELS not MOTORHOME.
It won’t cost more ! ( believe it or not) The cost to rent a class A motoorhome is more than $1,000 per week.Which means it’s really only for 5 days because the 1st day you spend loading it and getting it ready, the last day you have to unload and spend 1 whole day cleaning it. Not FUN! It’ll cost twice as much for gas, too.
At a motel, you’ll be much more comfortable climbing into fresh sheets each night and watching the boys swim at the end of the day. (most campsites don’t have pools.)
I am home-schooling my son, and plan to take him on a tour around the country when he’s a little older – how better to learn history, geography, and a host of other things than to experience them firsthand?
Like you, I’m looking forward to the experience.

I’ve wanted to do this. I can’t wait to hear about your experiences.
I always wondered what an RV trip would be like. Have you ever read the book Crazy Legs and All? I don’t remember much about it, except that is had this fantastic main character, and that her boyfriend did up their 1950s Airstream trailer (now called an RV) to look like a giant turkey with drumsticks attached all in shiny silver metal. Hilarious. Anyway, I can’t wait to hear more about the planning of this trip!
Marcy, that’s the only travel we did (and not much of it at that) until I was 12. We had a tiny little trailer and we went for three-day weekends at most — up to the Sea Lion Caves and the Rogue River in Oregon, etc. Wonderful memories.
Once we got a little older we were completely “seaworthy” travelers, and it just got better. We listened to lots of Cruel Music and some Steve Martin on 8-tracks. We nearly became a statistic in an Oklahoma tornado system that was one for the record books.
DO IT! DO IT BEFORE YOU CHANGE YOUR MINDS! ;)
