Having moved around a far amount in the 10 years we have been married, both my husband and I have always enjoyed taking ‘Family Field Trips’ for just the day. There is so much to do- not matter where we live…that we always have lots of options. And today we drove about 60 miles to an adorable area called Oak Glen. This is apple country. And you know that because every single sign in the town is either shaped like an apple or has an apple logo on it. Guess that is in case you forget and go crazy and ask for a pear or something.
You can pick apples, drink apples and eat apples in all its many forms. And of course there are petting zoos, pony rides and even panning for gold (but alas Tucker did not strike it rich- but he did score a strategically placed piece of tourquise rock). My mom went with us- and it was a little bitter sweet for us both. The last time we went to Oak Glen was 10 years ago, when Jack was 2 months old and my dad (Big Papa) was still here. Come to think of it- he was the original leader of “Dad Tours”. He loved to explore and ‘see what he can find’. Today, on the way home we came across a junkyard of antique trucks and odds and ends. The sort of place my dad would have died to explore. We stopped and I took photos. Jack said this ‘is just like heaven. Everything good comes to die here’ (he is a bit of an antique/retro freak just like Big Papa )….and I realized, the times I wish my dad was with me the most, he already is.

Your post was so touching, I feel like I get a glimpse of how special he was to you and what a great man he was.
Sorry, I submitted before I was done typing. anyhow, I feel like I get a glimpse of how special your Dad is to you and what a great man he was through your posts.
Awesome pictures and a sweet story. I got a little teary. *hugs*
I need to see those trucks! Other than my minivan, my latest obsession is old trucks. What a great adventure.
Beautiful story.
I feel like it needs to end with a big group ((HUG)).
Great site, I have been trying to build a blog, congrats to you, your site is awesome !
HOLY COW MARCY! i didn’t see this post for some reason, but when i got to the photo of the old car at retro reds i thought, “shame on me, she practically drove right by my house and i didn’t even offer her a glass of iced tea!” i was JUST THIS MINUTE looking for my own retro red photos but i lost all of them when i reformatted my hard drive last month — darn it! but that’s just what i get for being a lousy hostess when you came through my hood (almost) :(
ps, i’m sorry for the loss of your big papa. my grandfather was just like that too, and would have loved retro reds (except she’s RARELY open!)
I’m trying to get a fix on what that vehicle in the window — the one on the left — IS, exactly. Looks like fun.
Jack has the greatest way of expressing himself, doesn’t he? I wanna meet that boy some day.
