MarcyThen: My time as a 9 year old Saloon Girl

January 7, 2009

1979marcy Welcome to this week’s embarrassing photo for the famous We are THAT Family linky. I know you are having a hard time reading this post, because your eyes are drawn to the 9 year old girl who is dressed like a hooker or dance hall girl or both. I will give you a minute to take it all in. Purple off the shoulder dress, purple sparkle tights,my mothers wedding garter on my purple thigh, choker necklace and cherry red lips. Oh and I was wearing 2″ HEELS with this little number too. And then there is the pose. One of so many at this age when I thought I was the sexiest NINE YEAR OLD ev-vah. So here is the story…it was Halloween (like that helps) and this costume was left over from a dance performance (a little number to Barry’s Copacabana. Seriously) and well, realizing the night before Halloween that we forgot to actually get a costume my mom thought it was perfectly reasonable to let me wear it to school that day. She added the wrap, which as you can see I pulled DOWN to reveal my super SEXY nine year old shoulders. She told me to tell people that I was a ‘dancer lady from olden times’ if anyone asked what I was dressed as. ANYONE ASKED? As you can imagine EVERYONE asked. And I told everyone I was a ‘Saloon Girl’ (a term I picked up from many visits to Knotts Berry Farm). Well before long the principal stopped me at recess and asked ‘Ms.Marcy McClelland (he knew every kids name), Does your mother know you are wearing this costume?” and I replied “It was her idea. Its historical. From olden times. When they had Saloons.” Well, he was a patient man (Hi Mr. Green! Hope you are still around!) so he just giggled and said “Yes Marcy it seems very historical to me too.”

Oh my lands. Are those PURPLE tights you are wearing? Or is just glare from the dress? And I especially love the garter. On a nine-year-old. Oh yes, I do.

Do you still have that costume? Can I buy it from you? I’d love to give the husband a coronary when I tell him it’s for the Tongginator.

OMG! TODAY 9-10 year old girls wear mini skirts, belly exposed cropped shirts, leopard print, and much worse to school on any regular school day- forget Halloween! Did enjoy the picture, though! You loved Halloween then as now.

That is so glamourous!! I LOVE that picture and makes ME want to dig some old ones too! I had no idea gals in “olden times” could indeed be that glamourous and chic. The olden times deal has me really laughing…
