AdTalk: Leaving them out in the cold

So while Dave Brubecks was busy having his Kenmore installed into his fancy laundry room…..you know the laundry room with a fireplace, dining table (cuz who doesn’t love to sit and have a meal to the hum of the rinse cycle) and that swanky horse rug, his children stood outside during a winter blizzard and begged to be let in. I don’t care if you are ‘jazz pianist of the year’ Dave…you should be nicer to your children. Well, at least when they are here photographing you for an ad.

And now the astonishingly dated ad copy, which brings its own kind of comedy;

Pianist-composer Dave Brumbecks (for 13 years ‘Jazz Pianist of the Year”) lives in a huge Japanese-Style house in Wilton, Connecticut, with 5 pianos and 6 children. Statuesque Iola Brubeck runs the big house without any help except for a cleaning lady one day a week. “With 6 children, I needed the best dryer there is”, says Mrs. Brubeck, standing in her kitchen next to her new Lady Kenmore dryer from Sears, Roebuck and Co. “When everybody’s home, our Kenmore dryer averages 3 to 4 loads a day. Naturally, I try to buy everything-clothes-sheets-everything-permanent pressed. Or I’d spend my life ironing. Since permanent-pressed clothes have to be machine dried, a dryer is no longer a luxury-it’s a must!The great thing about our Lady Kenmore dryer is that it adjusts automatically for permanent-pressed fabrics. And this Sears dryer has something remarkable they call Wrinkle-Guard. It actually prevents wrinkles from setting in if you are not right there to take the clothes out when the drying cycle is through. The Wrinkle-Guard automatically gives clothes a good tumble every 5 minutes for over 2 hours or until I take them out. I know we could have paid more for a dryer, but you just can’t beat Sears!”

Sears-Kenmore Dryer-for women who want the best even if it does cost less.

With a tag line like that, I can pretty much guess that ol’ Dave here has never done a load of laundry in his life. And no help for poor statuesque Iola? Hey Dave, how about you cut back on the piano purchases and get this woman some help will ya? I mean ‘when all the kids are home’ (and not in boarding school) she has a hell of a lot of laundry to do.

Hee hee…would have loved to hear the pr pitch for that one!

“Uh, Dave? all you have to do is get your wife to stand next to the dryer and your kids to look in the window.”

“Oh hell, only 2 of 6 can be here…”

You do this much better than I.

They had me at the 5 pianos. And the washer and dryer are in her *kitchen?* Poor house slave.

Personally, I want the best even if it costs more.

I’m thinking they should leave the kids outside indefinitely. Cuts down on the laundry loads.

P.S. I want the most expensive, even if it sucks.

What, exactly, about that house is JAPANESE-STYLE? And why did it matter one whit to this copy?

Hey, Iola, Take Five — beer’s in the fridge. Dave’s turn with the stain treatment.
