We have a long tradition of fireworks in the street that dates back to the 1970s. Mom made homemade ice cream and we sat on the lawn with the hose running.

It’s been three years since we’ve done it because the ditches are full of yellow grass and the memories of raging fires in the hedges along the fields (not from fireworks) are still strong and cast a pall.

BUT

I have kept up the homemade ice cream tradition. I ain’t stupid!

We’re those people. Had to cross state lines. Loaded up on the big stuff. It was totally awesome!

No law ever stopped my neighbors in Garden Grove from launching their own little Disneyesque spectacular right across the street from us. This year they rivaled Los Al airbase and that is saying something for residents of a town that gives out $1000 fines.

My neighbors use a bottle rocket launcher to provide a little fireworks show for the neighborhood… right above our house. God bless America! (And please protect our house from flames.)

Ah, those stands. Haven’t seen one since I left OC a few decades ago, but this is making me SO nostalic!

There were no fireworks allowed AT ALL in Arizona when I was growing up, but thanks to having grandparents in another state, my brothers and I could have started a small war with our stash. Real fireworks, not sissy stuff. We’re talking firecrackers, cherry bombs, sparklers (of course!) and more.
