You may recall me talking about how I married into a family of collectors. And my father-in-law was the instigator of them all. He collected…everything. And my sister-in-law has been very creative in putting just some of these collections to good use. Okay try to look past the lovely winter-scape on her dining room table to those colorful boards up against the wall. Wondering what they are?
Matchbooks.
Hundreds and hundreds of matchbooks. She took my beloved father-in-law’s entire collection and created a stunning triptych.
It was great fun to look through them all and see where his travels had taken him. Every major restaurant. Every major theater. Every famous hotel. From all over the world.
He lived a great and exciting life.
Now my sister-in-law is a talented gal and she creates art constantly.
What to do with TONS of my father-in-laws ties?
Make a wreath and chair (and a few skirts). Naturally.
While I am at it, I want to share this photo…
One year she had a 14+ foot fully decorated tree come crashing to the ground.
And many of her favorite ornaments were smashed.
She collected them, placed them in a pretty bowl and displays them year-round in her dining room.
And seems like a great metaphor for lots of things.
It’s never all lost.
Just different.
And still worthwhile.

She seems like a fabulous person. Also, those matchbooks? Saweeeeet.
Cool!
Neckties make fabulous window treatments, too…and if you open the side seams of a pair of bluejeans and sew in the bottom bit of a necktie, you have funky bell-bottomesque panels.
Not that I’ve done that or anything…unless you think it’s neat, and then, yeah, totally.
