When I was a kid, in the center drawer of my moms dresser was sorta a catch-all of odds and ends. A pair of snow gloves, an ash tray, some jewelry and this little wallet sized calendar card with Elvis on it. I looked at the card a hundred times. And I honestly believed until I was about 10 yrs old- that it had actually been signed by Elvis and given to my mom. Even when I figured out that the signature had been printed on- I was still in love with this little memory scrap of paper.
Why?
Because my mom was the first one to explain to me that in the 60s you were either ‘a Beatles fan or an Elvis fan- but never both’. And just ask me how I feel about the Beatles someday- clearly I have aligned myself with Elvis too.
But my mom- has an Elvis story, that I love.
Sometime around 1969 or 70 she went to Vegas with her new husband, and another couple. She heard from a cocktail waitress which floor of the Hilton hotel Elvis and his entire entourage were staying. So she and her girlfriend got in the elevator and went up to that floor, got off, sat down on a sofa in the hallway and waited. They saw Pricilla and Elvis’s dad and they just sat there- patiently waiting. By now, the husbands were wondering where they were (it had been hours) and so they came up to that floor too. Not long after…Elvis got off the elevator. He stopped to talk to them- the two VERY young brides (basically teenagers!) and their annoyed new husbands.
As she recalls, Elvis was sweet and kind and didn’t seemed bothered by the ambush at all.
So when I snapped this pic of my mom and wax-Elvis over the weekend in Vegas, it was fun to imagine just for a second what it was like for her so many years ago.

And she is still every bit as beautiful.
Talk about an ambush!! Love you though….
Wait, I think you’re a little confused, Marcy, that’s gotta be your sister in the picture with Elvis. Ain’t no way that beautiful young lady is your Mom!
Marcy, you are truly a sweet daughter. And OF COURSE you are an Elvis fan! Have you taken your kids to Graceland yet? Riley missed her first day of school this year because she made me promise to take her as soon as I graduated from nursing school. I keep my promises! It was wonderful. Please take the boys. And your mom. (We’ll meet you there!)
