It is hard to admit it, but I have indeed switched my main phone from an iPhone 5 to the new Motorola MOTOX. As many people know, I work on PCs and while I have owned very fancy Macs in the past- they weren’t right for me (or my kids) so we sold the Mac and are PC only home, but that never stopped me from professing my love of the iPhone and iPad. I always felt the iTunes back-up and integration to be wonderful. In fact I have my whole family on iPhones now…well, except me. Because now I have made the switch.
So many people have expressed interest in this process, I am going to detail it out to you all.
Let’s start with what I THOUGHT before I began this.
1. Switching contacts was impossible
2. Android phones were not iTunes compatible.
3. Android phones didn’t have all the apps I love.
I am happy to report was wrong on all accounts.
First of all I had a helluva fun time ‘designing’ my MotoX. You select your colors and there are plenty to choose from. I accidently ended up with a phone that reminded me of Perry the Platypus. If only I could get this sound to download as a ring tone.
And when it came, and opened the box I was shocked how BIG the screen was compared to my iPhone. Since I use my iPhones like laptops at times- the extra screen space became one of my favorite aspects almost immediately. So I powered it up and thought- um, now what?
Contacts: By now most of us have acquired phone numbers, emails and even addresses in our phones. It is our own command central- so getting those guys out of there and on to the new phone was worrisome for me. Apparently there are a few ways to do this…but I went the easiest route and paid for Wondershare MobileTrans software (about $30 bucks)…then I just plugged in both phones and it sucked all the data over. All of it. DONE.
Music: Turns out you can indeed transfer your music to MotoX from iTunes. There are several apps for this…I used ‘Synctunes’ free app. Works great for one playlist, and if you want more you need to pay for the app. Which I doubt I will do- as I only use stored music on my phone when on planes. When I have wifi I use Spotify.
Apps: So bye bye ‘app store’ and hello Google Play. Works identical. You click, you search, you download. I was able to find droid versions of all my favorite apps. And many of the apps I already love- work better and smarter on my MotoX which was a surprise.
Okay Marcy- What didn’t you expect?
While I totally KNEW Google owned Motorola and that the MotoX was referred to often as a ‘Google’ phone… the clean integration with Google escaped me until I went to set up the phone. No special password or accounts…just enter my Google account (you know the one you use for You Tube, Blogger, Picasa, Chrome, Gmail and a million other Google owned properties) and BAM I was sync’d up. That means all my photos are auto stored on the G+ account (privately) where I can use the web version of SnapSeed (integrated) to edit pics like a pro and THEN share them. Without ever having to upload a darn thing.
Next was the texting surprise. Since I have been on iPhone with a PC, so I never got the glory of being able to text from my computer screen (possible if you have an iPhone/Mac combo) ….but with my MotoX I can. How does this work? Well I get a text on my phone and it pops up on my desktop- and I can type and reply from my main computer. It is magical.
And can we talk about photos for a sec? It happened slowly but over the last 3 or so years my various iPhones have become my main choice for picture taking. And I have been very satisfied with those images….until now. My MotoX is so much more intuitive to lighting and focus- AND once you take a photo- how about you EDIT it on the phone like a profesh? Yes, there are easy filters and crop and all the basics- but there is also sharpening and adjusting curves (just like Photoshop people) all built in to the phone. 
Now look- I am new to this phone and I am sure things will come up and I will say ‘bummer I could do that on my iPhone but not now’…so I am not naive- no piece of technology has it all. But so far I am very satisfied. And that is amazing. Because well….I am one picky gal when it comes to my technology choices. At the end of the day my MotoX does all the same basic things the iPhone does. Most of the functionality is the same- but the MotoX does it in a manner I prefer.
Speaking of which: I ordered cute MotoX earbuds in matching Perry turq for my new phone from Motorola and well….they kinda suck. And were EXPENSIVE. So that is a bummer. See? I told you I was honest!
